HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COUNCIL MEETING - June 2, 2011

(The complete Minutes are available in the Church Office.)

For the latest updates, see the St. John's web site  http://www.stjelc.org

*Eight voting Council members were present.

*The financial position continues to be closely monitored due to a low cash balance.  The Council voted to pay Synod 1% of the month's income and try to meet the whole commitment by year end.

* Alice Benson, the ELCA Foundation Regional Gift Planner, Metro DC Synod, gave a presentation on setting up a Mission Endowment Fund; the purpose of such a Fund, and how it can be funded by legacy gifts.

* The Council is considering establishing a Mission Endowment Fund for St. John's.

*There is a fellowship event planned for Father's Day, June 19th between the services.

*St. John's, in partnership with other local churches, will be assisting in the Federal summer lunch program that Millian Methodist is hosting this summer for the local school children.  Volunteers are needed.

*Property Ministry is reviewing the heating/cooling systems and working to find ways to be more energy efficient.  These systems have aged to the point where they are unreliable and are increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain.

*The sound system is also being reviewed to see if it needs enhancement.

*Nursery volunteers are needed to allow the Nursery to be open again.  Please see Karen Shilling or Kathy Clark if you can help.

*New members will be received the end of June.

*A gift of $2,000 will be sent to Anteneh Gebreselassie to assist him in his transition between graduation and receiving a call.  Alicia Cooke will receive the balance in the fund established over the years for her to assist her in returning from Slovakia this year.  (NOTE:  These gifts are from previously collected designated funds and do not affect current expenses or the operating cash balance.)

*Don't forget to keep your e-mail address current with the office so you receive the MESSENGER each month and Pastor Kern's Fridge Notes each week.

                                                                                    Respectfully submitted,
