A Word About Worship

Pastor_Travis_Kern2

Welcome!  Wherever you are on life’s journey you are welcome to all that is ours in Jesus Christ our Lord.  From flip flops to three piece suits all are welcome in worship.  Like the seasons of the year the Church has its own rhythm and way of keeping time.  Summer provides a time for us to gather to be nourished by the Lord as rain and sun nourish the fields. The focus of our worship is engaging God who is faithful, Christ who is present, and the Holy Spirit that leads us into life.
Strong center and open door is one way to describe worship on Sunday.  An open door to reality and conditions of the world are what we bring with us to worship.  A strong center expressing grace and forgiveness rooted in Baptism, Word, Communion, and Prayer shared by all for all people.  Our worship is always contemporary because we engage in worship together new each week.  Our worship is always traditional because the ancient Christian pattern of gathering together to hear the Word, share the Meal, and pray for the world and all those in need is present, too.

So I humbly invite you to engage worship with us each week to discover the rich variety of grace and love God pours out upon us.  You may notice new colors, new songs, and new wrinkles from time to time right alongside beloved songs from years gone by.
People new to St. John’s and life in the Church community may be wondering a bit about the robes, called an alb worn by the Pastor.  The alb is reminder of baptismal robes symbolizing the new life we have in Christ through baptism.  The stole is a symbol of ordination.  Taken together the alb and stole serve to mark the Pastor as the presiding minister in worship.  Further, the alb and stole help worshippers to focus less on what the pastor may be wearing and turn to focus on the living God we come to worship.
Come now and worship the Lord with us.
This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it.

In Christ,  Pastor Kern
